Fushigi Yuugi - The Mysterious Play
Fushigi Yuugi is a Japanese manga and anime by Watase Yuu and serialized in the manga magazine Shoujo Comic. The anime spans a total of 52 TV episodes, which are divided into two seasons. Additionally, there are 2 TV "Specials", and a total of 13 OVAs, broken up into Series 1 (3 episodes), Series 2 (6 episodes), both sold as the Oni set and Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden (4 Episodes). The manga spans 18 collected volumes.
Fushigi Yuugi is an epic drama/comedy/love story and that starts when two 15 year old girls, Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui find a book in the restricted section of the National Library, titled "The Universe of the Four Gods" (Shijin tenshi sho). When they open the book, they are transported to the world inside the novel, one reminiscent of ancient feudal China. They are attacked by thieves and saved by Tamahome, a greedy martial artist, with a character glowing on his forehead.
Both Yui and Miaka then come back into the real world, but curiosity got the better of Miaka and she goes back into the book to find Tamahome. News of a foreign girl has reached the emperor and they are both brought to the palace and meet Hotohori. Miaka then learns about a legend that a girl from a different land is destined to be the Priestess of Suzaku (Suzaku no miko), god of the southern country of Konan. She then has to collect the seven star warriors of Suzaku (Suzaku seishi), of whom Tamahome and Hotohori are a part of, and summon the God, who will then grant the priestess three wishes. Miaka becomes this and slowly falls in love with Tamahome, meanwhile in the real world, Yui discovers Miaka has gone back into the book and reads the events that occur. Miaka then finds Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake and Chiriko. Yui meanwhile, goes back into the book and following a sequence of events including rape, betrayal by Miaka and meeting Nakago, a Seiryu seishi (Seiryu is the god of the west country of Koutou), she then becomes the Seiryuu no miko. The two then become rivals for Tamahome's affection and to be the first to summon thier gods. Nakago and the Seiryuu seishi, Amiboshi, Suboshi, Soi, Tomo, Ashitare and Miboshi continue to get in the way of the Suzaku seishi and cause them unable to summon Suzaku without Genbu no miko and Byakko no miko's shinzaho.
After trials recovering the sacred objects, Yui summons Seiryuu, while in the real world, Miaka's older brother Keisuke and his friend Tetsuya discover that the priestess becomes a sacrifice for the god, unless her will is strong enough. Nakago comes into the real world to wreak havoc and it takes the combined effort of all the ghosts and remaining Suzaku warriors, Yui and Miaka's restored friendship and Suzaku's powers to stop him. Unfortunately, Miaka and Tamahome can't be together, but his final wish was to be reincarnated into her world so thier love may continue on. Amazingly enough, after Miaka and Yui passed thier entrace exams and started high school, they discover a transfer student that happens to remember his past life as the protector of a priestess in an ancient land.
